Humor has its many uses, such as a “buffer against depression and hopelessness” as suggested by psychologist Daniela S. Hugelshofer. Or help us ease the tension, and help everyone cope with our current situations. Most humor that tends to those needs are often simple slapstick jokes that the general population finds amusing. Comedy has also been used to point out serious social issues through the use of the humor’s less understood brother, Satire. People’s tolerance and reaction to jokes based on themselves has stayed consistent based on their personal beliefs; People are also show dependence on the theory of Superiority for humor while not thinking how it affects the performer.
People often have trouble laughing at themselves, so they look for humor at the cost of someone else’s misery and sometimes personal beliefs. One example of this situation is a bit from a stand up from British Comedian Dara O’ Briain. Its about how after a few of his previous shows he started to receive complaints such as. “You’ll make jokes about Catholics, you’ll make jokes about Protestants, but you won’t make jokes about Muslims, will you?” To which Dara’s response is, “There are two reasons why I don’t do jokes about Muslims. A. I don’t know a fuckin’ thing about Muslims. And B… Neither do you.” This situation shows how some groups of people think that instead of just enjoying being the bud of some light hearted jokes, they want the comedian to change based on their views. Its noted nowadays that comedians tend to pass away earlier than most people for various reasons. Especially after the recent suicide of famed comedian Robin Williams. Theres a quite a list of other jesters that passed before their time. Such as John Candy who died of a heart attack at 43 possibly due to weight issue. Chris Farley died at 33 in 1997 of a drug overdose. Similar cause happened to Mitch hedberg in 2005 at the age of 37. Greg Giraldo also fell to drug overdose at 44 in 2010. It seems too common for comedians to die so young and everyone wonders why. There could be several reasons; unlike other performers comedians are always expected to be the funny guy regardless of the situation. This can put a great amount of stress on the individual. An perfect example of this is when notable funnyman Dave Chappelle walked off stage during a shooting of his show after the audience wouldn’t stop repeating the same joke and berating him. After a few minutes he returns for a final word to the crowd. “You know why my show is good? Because the network officials say you 're not smart enough to get what I 'm doing, and every day I fight for you. I tell them how smart you are. Turns out, I was wrong.
