Humility In Pride And Prejudice Analysis

Darcy’s Justification Prejudice often wards one from viewing another’s character correctly while pride hinders from further investigation. Consequently, Elizabeth Bennet got tangled in the sticky web of this cycle in the novel, Pride and Prejudice, concerning Mr. Darcy. However, had she gone straight to the origin of the information instead of relying on a second hand story and observations made from afar Ms. Bennet would have gained invaluable information that would have stopped her prejudice against him. At one point in the novel, Elizabeth becomes exceedingly frustrated and calls Darcy out on his actions. As a result, Darcy writes Elizabeth a note explaining himself on pages 167-173 in the book, following this letter Elizabeth reacts …show more content…
People have to make a conscience effort to talk to others with humility or approach scenes whether it embarrasses them or not. After reading Darcy’s letter, that has been referenced above, Elizabeth has a moment where she had to, “again begin the mortifying perusal of all that related to Wickham, and commanded herself so far as to examine the meaning of every sentence (Austen 175). Humility is the opposite of pride. In the book Pride and Prejudice Jane develops the characters by showing both their good qualities and their qualities that ought to be improved upon. One of Ms.Bennet’s qualities is not idealistic is her pride. Now Mr.Darcy’s is far worse however she does struggle with it also. Yet, even though she was mortified Lizzy reread that letter. This is ironic because she had pointed out all of Darcy’s flaws and through his his explanation letter she saw the error of her thoughts. When the author chose to add this to the story it helped it along because it shows how people as a whole really can change incorrect thinking if they humble themselves.
