It should be made known that, prior to participating in this course, I was not even aware of what the Benedictine Hallmarks were. Although I lack a definitive religious perspective, I find that the Hallmarks provide a standard guideline for leading a good and productive life. Also, they demonstrate the standard by which we should respect and value our fellow man. In reflecting upon the different Hallmarks we have studied in this course, I would have to count Humility and Hospitality as those that resonate the most with me at my current stage in life.
Humility & Hospitality Humility is accepting the reality of the day-to-day world and our place within it. In addition, humility is acknowledging our faults and weaknesses as well as striving to recognize our strengths and being grateful for the strengths of others. By working together instead of competing against one another we may realize and achieve our collective purpose. Therefore, it is a good rule of thumb to always be open to the ideas and experiences of others and accepting of our differences. My own Humility affects my thoughts and actions within my family and workplace. Furthermore, Hospitality fosters intercultural awareness, respectful communication, and reminds us that generosity should be shared amongst friends and strangers. I can apply this act of Hospitality in my everyday life by always making sure that everyone I encounter feels valued and welcomed. In my opinion, these two Hallmarks are interdependent. One calls for realism and accountability while the other calls for openness and acceptance, both of which are extremely important to a successful social and work
