Humble Leadership

As a leader, possessing the trait of humility is an extremely important trait. Humble leaders possess the ability to subdue their egos, ignore their selfish desires, and communicate efficiently with their teams; as outlined by Ahn and Ettner (2014), “Humility is the lack of arrogance, capacity to listen carefully, and egolessness - and “humble” leaders are often at the helm of superior-performing organizations” (p. 983). In other words, humble leaders chose to emphases the team concept over the “me” concept. Humble leaders promote the team concept by leading by example, not placing their needs about their own, and emphasizing the value of being a part of a team. Therefore, humble leaders are approachable. Humble leaders solicit ideas from their team and values everyone’s opinions; this further reinforces the team concept by emphasizing inclusion instead of diversion. This leads to team “buy in”, thus generating a team that functions at a high compacity.
Lastly, in an organization, everyone knows who the “boss” is; their name is on their evaluations, their picture is hung in a public location, or they have their own private office. It is easy for a leader to fall into the pride trap; however, leaders should resist this urge and instead strive to remain humble. According to Proverbs 11:2,

According to Winston and Fields (2015), “Servant leadership emphasizes a leader’s facilitation of follower performance and development. This facilitation can occur directly through leader mentoring, engaging followers in training, or indirectly by providing support and concern as well as an ethical and transparent working environment” (p. 414).
