Humble Inquiry Analysis

Throughout my time volunteering at First Light Women and Children’s Shelter, I have asked many questions. A lot of my questions, as I have discovered, can be solved, explained, or made sense of by using concepts from Heifetz et al.’s teachings such as leadership, authority, and adaptive challenges. Recently, I have studied Schein’s concept of humble inquiry. My learning while serving at First Light has been rooted in asking questions and inquiring. Thus, Schein’s concept has prompted me to ponder the type(s) of inquiry present in my experiences–including a simple question about a dish being served that drastically changed the context of the situation–and my capacity to ask them. Before I look at my capacity for Schein’s key concept, humble inquiry, in my experience, we need to first know what it is. We know that she was successful, thus effective because she was mindful, another important aspect of having the capacity to practice humble inquiry gained from reflection of self, in serving the meats and asking questions in order to offer the vegetarian lady the tofu dish in the warmer (103). After examining Cayla and her practice of humble inquiry in the incident, I realize did not practice humble inquiry. Why did I not? Using the ORJI Cycle, we can take a look at my filters and biases that shaped how I didn’t practice Schein’s concept. The ORJI Cycle is a chart that explains the process that we use in order to reflect on our thoughts and perceptions to diagnose our psychological filters and biases. It is important to diagnose what filters and biases we hold, because, with them, we cannot accurately inquire because we have assumptions and preconceptions about situations we are approaching
