Have you ever wondered that humans are not alone? In Arthur C. Clarke’s Childhood’s End he goes in-depth with human interaction with a race of intelligent aliens called Overlords. Clarke had a sizable interest in science fiction and wrote many award winning novels about this very subject. The book was written in the 1950’s but still has lasting impressions on its present day readers.
Arthur Charles Clarke was born on December 16 1917. He was not the run of the mill child growing up in Minehead, United Kingdom (Abbott 1). As the son of a farmer you might expect him to be interested in agriculture or animals, not in his case. Arthur had a knack for science, particularly astronomy. Here he became a radar specialist which drove him to write of his studies. Clarke wrote “Wireless World”, which explained how orbiting satellites with radio waves bouncing back and forth from earth to satellite and back could make communication easier from a global standpoint. In just a few years this project became a reality (“Arthur” Newsmakers 2). Many inventions just like this came from Clarke’s novels or movies he had made. He seemed to predict technology before it even happened. It is also claimed Clarke had inspired the Creator of Star Trek to make the series (“Arthur” Newsmakers 1). Arthur grew a reputation for creating accurate and interesting scientific articles and still enjoyed writing of the fictional side in novels of which he wrote over a hundred (Abbott 1). 2001: A Space Odyssey became one of the most popular science fiction books of its time, in 1968, giving Clarke the biggest science fiction following (“Arthur” Newsmakers 2). He made movies for some of his books that also gained a lot of popularity and even wrote books as he wrote the script for a movie.
