Society Is Good

They’re about 7.125 billion people in the world, and in no way is it possible that every one of those people are “good.” The reason I put that word in parenthesis is because the meaning of it varies from one another. For example, they could be a good father, but an evil husband. The word good will be used in a sense of moral goodness. Out of all those people in the world, a small majority of them can’t make humanity evil just because they want to be. For example, just because 1 apple out of 10 is bad, doesn’t make the rest of the apples bad. I believe that humans are good because they help each other out when needed, and no matter how “evil” they seem, they’ll always have someone or something they love. William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, shows that humans are good through the way the kids’ pact together. Of course, there are some rotten apples in the group, but overall they are all good. At the beginning of the book, all of the kids band together to try and survive until they are rescued. Even though it was not directly shown through a hug, they still cared about each other. If they truly were evil and didn’t care about one another, they wouldn’t have stayed with each other as long as they did. Now, the kids did split up, and mainly because of Jack. He wanted to leave the group, because he was the one evil apple in the bunch. He was tired of not being in charge and felt he needed to take action. Now just because he wasn’t one of the good apples, doesn’t mean the rest are bad. The only reason some of the other kids left to join Jack wasn’t because they were evil, but because their instinct to survive kicked in. They knew that Jack was a strong leader and he had what it took to survive. Another way Golding shows that humans are good is through how they helped each other. Now, not every boy helped with the main necessities such as building the huts, keeping the fire alive, or hunting, but this was because they were either too small or focused on other projects. We need to keep in mind that some of the boys were very young and in no way fit enough to help build a hut or hunt animals. Although instead of doing nothing and just watching they did something productive, such as picking fruit or gathering fire wood. They all had good intentions, but because some they haven’t reached the age of reason, they might not have known what they were doing. Golding’s view that society is essentially good can be seen throughout history. For example, in almost every city you find a charity house or a …show more content…
If you walk down a block in downtown Fort Wayne, the chances are you will see at least 2 homeless people begging for change. The chances of you giving them money is probably slim, but again, that varies on your personal moral code. But they’re people that will give them money. They put their full trust into that person that they will do the right thing with the money they just received. Whether or not they do the right thing is completely up to them and God. But the people that gave them the money are the people that make humanity great. They are the people that every city, states, and country needs. They believe that humanity is great and they we need to watch out for each other in any way we can. Another example of everyday is life through pure common good. If someone drops money or forgets something at a store, the chances are that someone will see that and return it. I’ve personally seen an older woman forget her purse outside on a table at Pint n Slice downtown. Then, a very sketchy looking man walked up to it and grabbed it, he then proceeded to yell for the lady until she turned around. He politely walked over and handed her the purse. After some talking, the lady pulled out some money and handed it to him and gave him a hug. Then they both walked into a separate direction with a new friend in their

Why can society spend countless, pointless dollars on meaningless objects, but cringe thinking about donating a dollar to someone in need? By definition from the McKinney Act of 1987, a homeless person is one who does not have a fixed residence to sleep at or who has a fixed residence that is a supervised shelter (Homeless Needs para 1). During the winter of 2014, there were 49,933 homeless veterans living in the United States. Forty-nine thousand, nine hundred and thirty-three people struggling to live on a day to day basis that deserve to live in luxury and honor (Fact para 1). Approximately one out of every three homeless men is a veteran (Homeless National 1).…

Spanning continents, centuries, and cultures, generosity, as defined by the Oxford Online English Dictionary, is “the quality of being kind, understanding, and not selfish; a willingness to ive money and other valuable things to others.” (Oxford Online Dictionary). Just as value may vary depending on context, generosity may be perceived in many different forms; it can be as simple as sharing a piece of food with a friend to donation large sums of monetary resources to the public. “The Ninety-Five Theses,” written by Doctor Martin Luther, illustrates the friar’s blatant protest against the Catholic Church, and its corrupted practices, through contrasting instructions that Luther deemed aligned with the Bible.…

These type of panhandlers ruin the panhandling community for the rest of them. For example a panhandler in California was arrested for standing on the median without a permit. He had over one thousand dollars on him when he was booked “Aggressive panhandler arrested with $1,800”. In my opinion no person who is panhandling should have that kind of money. If you have that much money you have no need to try and sponge more money from people.…

Poverty Damages Every Society Tracy Kidder helped paint the idealism of Dr. Paul Farmer by saying, “the idea that some lives matter less is the root of all that’s wrong with the world” (Kidder). Kidder explains Farmer’s message that every person is equal and no one is less than other, even if it means Farmer has to trek for hours to help his patients in the most rural parts of Haiti. Aiding the poor is not something we strive to do for own moral superiority nor is it the compassionate thing to do, poverty damages every society, from the wealthier nations to third world countries. This means it is the responsibility of every individual, regardless of income or background to help the poor by means of volunteering and understanding we are in it…

Religious Response I have struggled with stories from the news of Catholic priests embroiled in child molestations and questioned my involvement or associating myself with an institution that not only denies some of the accusations but also hides the facts from the public. I sometimes ignore the stories thinking that hatred towards these evil people will stress me out to the point where I will leave the church completely for the lack of trust and deceptive tactics played on the congregation. What kind of person does this acts? What goes through their devious minds as they continue to practice their rituals and preach the gospel?…

Living life for other people is a way of life people have been trying to master for years. While Jesus Christ is the only human to completely do it, other humans have come close to being selfless in everything they do. Charles Darnay, a character in Charles Dicken’s A Tale of Two Cities, and Jonathan, the son of Saul, from First Samuel in the Bible, are legitimately selfless people and show multiple similarities in the way they act and treat those around them. While passing on wealth and power for the benefit of other people, Jonathan and Charles Darnay show benevolence as they love the people their families hurt and make up for the wrongdoing their relatives…

I often tend to view people as two different types: one who will drop what they are doing and help someone, or the one to carrying on with life only to care about themselves. As I read through this article, “Does It Make a Difference to Know Poor People?” by Michael Jordan Laskey, I realized that more people should strive to interact with helplessness and those in need. The main character of the article, Mike, was in Lower Manhattan where he and a group of classmates were handing sandwiches along with hot chocolate to the homeless. One of the first people Mike met there was a man named Jian. Jian, who did not speak any English at all stood next to Mike the whole time.…

Keller’s statement on page seven, “It stands to reason that injustice is easier to perform against people without the money or social status to defend themselves” (Keller, 2012). People who are poor or lack social status tend to be victims of injustice more than people who are rich and have social leverage. People who are more vulnerable, less money or social pull, are the lower class and are treated as such. If you can’t afford a legal bills or you don’t have any connections than people take advantage of you. Lower class can be treated as if they are less of a person or don’t matter as much.…

If you walk down the streets of downtown San Francisco, you are bound to see at least one homeless person asking for money on the streets. I surveyed 68 Diablo Valley College students and 45 students said they would not give money if they saw a homeless person panhandling. 23 students said they might give money if they saw a homeless person asking for money if they are feel they are well-off at the moment, if they have time to stop and dig up a few dollars from their wallet, and if they have cash on them. None of the surveyed students refused to respond and none of the students said they always give money to homeless people on the streets. In the article “Why I Don’t Give Money to Homeless People” from Business Insider, the author, Charlie Pabst gives reasons why he believes that giving money to homeless people will not better their lives.…
