The question of how Jesus was fully man and fully human continues to linger on day by day, as people try to understand who Jesus was and is. For decades, theologists and historians in search for the answers have closely and continually studied Jesus’ life and His teachings. The more people seek to know exactly who He was during his years on earth, the more they uncover not only His divinity, but also His humanity. The humanity of Jesus is something wonderful to understand and worth the time to investigate. There are several aspects to the humanity of Jesus that are truly worth knowing. His mother was Mary. She gave birth to Jesus as a virgin and raised Him with her later husband Joseph. Joseph was Jesus earthly father (Luke 3:23, John 1:45). He was a carpenter and raised Jesus as his own child, even though he was not biologically His father. Jesus was raised by a fully human and earthly mother and a father, who had common, and by no means, high-class jobs. Not only did Jesus have an earthly mother and father, but he also had several brothers that are spoken of. Among them were James, Judas (not Iscariot), Joses, and Simon (Mark 6:3). II Corinthians 8:9 says that, “…He became poor, so that you by His poverty might become rich.” He intentionally exchanged His heavenly wealth for earthly poverty so that those who follow Him might experience the riches of heaven. He was raised in a family who had very little and gave to the poor. Unlike most Kings, Jesus was not raised in a palace with servants and fancy meals, but instead was raised in poverty. What makes this so wonderful is that it appeals to others who have been raised in poverty. Because Jesus was raised with very little, He gained His wealth and worth in His Heavenly Father and was able to be an example to all of those around Him and for future generations to come. In Matthew 8:20, Jesus says, “ Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” He depended on the charity of others to provide food and shelter for Him. The apostle Paul actually makes it a priority to emphasize to his readers just how much Jesus was living in poverty. If one truly wanted to be blunt about the matter, they could easily say that Jesus lived His life in ministry, homeless, according to today’s definition. It is therefore easy to conclude that from his childhood throughout His adult ministry, Jesus knew what it meant to live in a physical poverty, but certainly not a spiritual
