Ever since I was little, I’ve always wanted to help people. Being a Boy Scout gave me the opportunity to do so. For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. At St. Jude day school I was a volunteer where I helped distribute the meals for the kids, give them snacks entertain the kids and clean up after. This day school is a church in neighborhood where many people use to put their kids in while they go to work. During the summer I would volunteer where there would be almost 50 kids in the summer camp. It was so chaotic at times. While there, I was pushed well beyond my limits. During my two volunteer experiences I participated in for the service learning portion of this class, I had the opportunity to witness many different walks of life. I was taken in on a side of poverty I’ve never before seen, and on a very intimate level. My first volunteer experience this semester was at a local food pantry, the Pratt-Quigley center.
