Middle ages, the period in European history from the breakdown of Roman human progress in the fifth-century CE to the time of the Renaissance (differently translated as starting in the thirteenth, fourteenth, or fifteenth century, contingent upon the district of Europe and on different variables). The term and its customary importance were presented by Italian humanists with harmful purpose. The humanists were occupied with a recovery of Classical learning and culture, and the thought of a thousand-year time of dimness and obliviousness isolating them from the antiquated Greek and Roman world served to highlight the humanists' own particular work and standards.
