Freud came to the conclusion that depression is inward anger (Burger, 2011). Anger that is turn on one’s self. Self-esteem is what the humanistic approaches discusses. It seems that individuals who have never developed a good self-esteem are depressed this is an assumption. Another assumption is that one cannot improve their self-esteem. Except for the explanation of depression, I agree with this approach. The explanation of depression I don’t not agree with because of personal experience. I have a major depression order and it is due to a chemical in balance not because of a low self-esteem. I believe that you need to live now and forget yesterday. I believe that are people are good it is the environment that they are raised in that changes their personality. People can live in a bad environment and still be motivated and happy. It depends on the up bring and the strength of their personality. I grew up in the ghetto and had rough teen age years. But I decided the ghetto was not going to control me I was going to control the ghetto. I have had ups and downs in my life but I have earned a dual Bachelor’s degree and have two Master’s degrees that I have completed.
