Rocky intertidal zonation at Lawrencetown Beach Introduction Nova Scotia has an extensive coastline with varying degrees of exposure. The intertidal zone (littoral zone) is where the ocean meets land and around Nova Scotia’s coast this zone is highly diverse, from salt marshes to mudflats and rocky shores. The intertidal zone is the area that is exposed to air at low tide and submerged by water at high tide and the species that are located here need to tolerate various levels of exposure. The factors that affect the abundance of species present in an area vary with spatial scale.…
Two different locations were examined: the Winthrop Lake and the Winthrop golf course. Both areas are located at the Winthrop Recreational Complex, in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The experiment was formed to determine the amount of species richness in both general areas. The hypothesis that was formed stated: that the Winthrop Lake area would have a greater amount of species diversity than the golf course area based on effects of temperature, wind speed, and local habits. When going into these locations groups of six individuals were formed.…
Southwest Louisiana is characterized by extensive coastal marshland interrupted by numerous forests atop relict beach ridges, or chenier ridges, and natural ridges or levees. The cheniers of southwest Louisiana and the natural ridges of southeast Louisiana are unique geological features that are critical components of the ecology of these areas. They support a diversity of wildlife and, because of their location along important migration pathways, are especially important for Neotropical migratory songbirds. Available long term data sets reveal population declines among many migratory landbirds species over the past quarter century ().…
Mahatma Ghandi once said, “It's the action, not the fruit of the action, that's important. You have to do the right thing. It may not be in your power, may not be in your time, that there'll be any fruit. But that doesn't mean you stop doing the right thing. You may never know what results come from your action.…
Boyd Hill Nature Preserve is now one of my favorite places in St. Petersburg! This field trip was a nice break from the fast-paced urban lifestyle that I have been living since moving away from home. Our excursion began at the bird-of-prey aviary. There were several types of birds at the aviary: eastern screech owls, turkey vultures, barred owls, great horned owls, and a bald eagle, to name a few. At the aviary, I learned that barred owls are best known for a call that sounds like, "Who cooks for you……
The Jungle During the 1880-1910 times, a lot of tragic events occurred relating to urbanization, industrialization, and immigration. Workplace safety, treatment of immigrants, and child labor were events that changed America as a whole the worst way possible. Numerous of areas in the United States were settled as a trading post and transportation routes. As the industries and technology improved, cities in America became the center of products.…
The Jungle The Jungle by Upton Sinclair is a book about a family of immigrants who came to America to try and form a better life for themselves and their family. The book mainly focused on the pain parts of Urbanization and the struggles that each main problems came with. For example, crime and corruption was one of the main struggles of urbanization at the time. The government inspector at the factory Jurgis works at dosen’t stop the bad, rotten meat from going through to processing.…
"Louisiana are the most right-leaning states in the union” (Newport). The South reliably votes for Republicans and is often referred to as a Republican stronghold. In 2008, “Republican presidential candidate John McCain won Alabama by 21.6 percent” (Nypost). This highlights the regions right-leaning tendencies.…
After the War of 1812, shifts in technology and economic growth ushered in transformational changes into the American society. Since major populations and trade centers were landlocked, it made bulk shipments difficult to mobilize on a national scale. Such challenges served as a catalyst for change in efforts to achieve greater economic outcomes. Needs for improvements become increasingly linked to transportation, infrastructure, and communication. By the nineteenth century, the transportation industry underwent drastic construction to develop roads, canals, and railroads to help improve trading networks abroad.…
Most of the time birds are scooping everything out of the water like plastic bags and other items that float out to the sea. Most of the time they are bags covering birds that have no choice but to eat it off them…
Following a decade of a booming economy during the Roaring Twenties, New York suffered a period of economic collapse, which began with the Wall Street Crash on Black Tuesday in 1929, and continued with the Great Depression. The 1930s was a decade that was mostly consumed with financial depression that left most of New York City in shambles. Many Americans did not see the Depression coming, which resulted in mass panic that had a substantial effect on culture at the time. New York City, was at the heart of the Depression, was also as a place of high architectural advancement.…
What are some of the key factors which have driven and facilitated urban development over time? Referring to examples from New Zealand and other countries, explain some of the different types of contemporary cities. Introduction Urban development is constantly growing in today’s society due to the world’s population growth and many people are wanting to live in Urban areas opposed to rural areas. In the 30 year period between 2000 and 2030 the UN has estimated that the world population will significantly increase and majority of this increase will occur in urban centres (An introduction to human geography, 2012).…
(Saunders, 1973.) As a global species, they are typically found on coastlines, in bays, by major lakes, and in urban areas (OneKindPlanet,2016.) They live in every climate on the globe, with the exception of very harsh areas such as severe deserts or permanently frozen parts of the globe (Austin Jr., 1961). While seagulls have a reputation for drifting along the seas, they typically stay close to shore. A reason for this misconception may be that gulls will occasionally follow ships out to sea in hopes of receiving scraps that they sometimes leave behind (Austin Jr., 1961.)…
Urban Community and Lifestyle Urban communities are well developed areas where there is a large density of people living. Often an urban area is the region around a city and primarily consists of commercial buildings, houses, motorways, bridges, and railroads. According to the United States Census Bureau in 2010 there was 249,253,271 people living in urban areas, which is eighty-one percent of the U.S. population (2010 Census Urban and Rural Classification and Urban Area Criteria, n.d.). To gain a better understanding of urban living, I have interviewed three individuals who are currently living in metropolitan communities. With their perception, I concluded that there are three similar themes: crime, poverty, and homelessness.…
The twenty-first century marks the first time in history that the majority of the world’s population live in urban areas (Buhaug & Urdal, 2013). Urbanization is continuing rapidly, especially in cities of the global South. Poverty is also urbanizing as reflected in the lack of adequate housing, infrastructure and services for a majority of poor urban populations. One third of the world’s population is estimated to be living in slum conditions characterized by high densities of low income residents (Phua & Ooi, 2007). City governments are unable to keep up with the needs of growing urban populations, and government corruption leads to further difficulty in addressing the low standards of living of the urban poor.…
