Human trafficking has become one of the worlds most renowned national crimes that are increasingly being committed today. Since the year 2012 there have been over 40,000 cases of human trafficking that are reported (Miller and Wasileski 302). Those numbers do not include the number of human trafficking cases that goes unreported daily. Research supports the statistics that 21% of the 40,000 cases of human trafficking are of underage females. And of those 40,000 human trafficking cases, 13% of the cases have victims that are adult women. That's a total of 34% of human trafficking cases that involves a woman (Hodge 145). The behaviors of trafficking women can be tracked all the way back to the African slave trade. After times of reconstruction, post-civil war, the idea of capturing and selling women for personal gain became popular. These women were sold for multiple different reasons including but not limited to forceful labor, sexual assault, or complete prostitution. Throughout the history of women trafficking, within the United States of America, there has been controversy over the exact definition of women trafficking. Before tackling issues such as kidnapping, rape, and sometimes murder, the concept of human trafficking sets off a range of economic and social downfalls for any society (Miller and Wasileski 302). The high spikes of the volume of women and young girls that are being introduced into the world of sex trafficking increases the rate of venereal diseases spreading quicker than anything seen before within the sex industry (Hodge 148). The results from this spike of sexually transmitted diseases conclude a shorter lifespan of over 15% of women involved in a trafficking situation.
