Lack of awareness in health workers, law enforcement, and other official institutions is a major reason people are increasingly involved in human trafficking. All members of society need to be educated on the nature of human trafficking, the signs pointing to human trafficking situations, and on the damage caused to victims. Government agencies, hospitals, media, businesses, and the general public need to work together to help prevent trafficking and rescue victims. The general public can play just as large a role as the state government in helping identifying trafficking situations by reporting concerns to the state government. However, the government departments such as health care and the police need to be available and open to the concerns of the public. Traffickers often target the vulnerable, hurting, and lonely people. Traffickers gain a psychological hold over such victims making them feel as if their situation is their own fault and they deserve to be punished (Human Trafficking Task Force). In order to help prevent such cases, friends, neighbors, and teachers need be aware of the signs of human trafficking such the appearances of physical/sexual abuse, fear, anxiousness, depression, and nervousness, or the incapability to know where he/she is at the time.
