All of this is leading to an increased unawareness of the public. This unawareness is causing a state of blissful ignorance among society and, in turn, jeopardizing the bodies and lives of innocent women and children around the world. The media has never had as large of an impact on society as it does today and since the government does not want the public to be totally aware of the current situation, they censor the media. The Unites States government does not want to do anything that puts their “greatest nation in the world” title in jeopardy therefore they do their best to censor these stories out of the media to try and uphold that facade. In an effort to uphold the facade of being problem free the government prevents major news outlets from airing these stories. They do not want the american people as well as foreign entities from finding out that the United States has a human trafficking problem. These major news outlets such as, CNN and Fox news are the two most frequently watched and trusted news channels in America (“United States cable news,” 2014) with an average of 421,000 viewers everyday (Ariens, 2014). With the lack of programs and laws established about the issue one would think keeping them up to date would not be a challenge however, for the government, it is. The Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) is the only law that provides any means on how to combat trafficking worldwide. It is easy to assume that an act like this would be updated and perfected periodically, yet it is only updated once every two years (“Current Laws Against Human Trafficking,” 2012).
