Human trafficking is one of the greatest, yet little known problems facing Russia. On November 3, 1989, groups of people got together to demolish the Berlin Wall. The Soviet Empire had collapsed. Nationally and globally, people joined the celebration and promised to help reform the old communist system. The unfortunate reality of the post-communist transition hit fast and severely. Freedom came with a new form of modern slavery—human trafficking. The most important aspects of human trafficking, which will be included in my research are: who is trafficked, the causes of trafficking, and the steps that Russia has taken and/or need to take in order to combat trafficking. “Human trafficking”, “trafficking in person”, “sex slave” and “modern slavery” all refer to the “act of recruiting, harboring, transporting, providing, or obtaining a person for compelled labor or commercial sex acts through the use of force, fraud, or coercion.” Millions of men, …show more content…
The current economic situation in Russia makes it hard for women to find jobs and provide for their families, which puts them and their children at a high risk for trafficking. Trafficking is also caused by numerous different factors like the corruption in the government, economic instability, poverty, and inefficient legal systems. One of the reasons why human trafficking has emerged in Russia is because of the bad economic situation and the high levels of corruption. There is often little, if any, enforced punishment for traffickers. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia’s political system is unstable mainly because of the mafia. They continue to infiltrate the government and the corruption is so deeply rooted that many law enforcement officers are also involved with the trafficking industry. Often children and women have no one to turn to if they are trafficked and this continues to happen due to the lack of
