"People were created to be loved. Things were created to be used. The reason why the world is in chaos is because things are being loved and people are being used."(27). Houston is pin-pointed for what is known as the United States' modern day slavery. Human trafficking, a growing issue due to geography and demand, that effects not only the individual but the community at large.
The location and amount of people that pass through Houston is the reason why it is such a focal point for trafficking. Studies show that a quarter of all of the US' trafficking takes place in Texas, and Houston is the hub spot. This is because Houston being so close to the I-10 corridor, which is the United States' most used trafficking path(Darla). A friend

There are many people that have willingly chosen this lifestyle due to their desperate need of money. Majority of those who chose to put themselves in this lifestyle can't seem to get out once they are in, whether they want to or not. "Enforcers" usually get into it for one of two reasons if not both, for money or for their own selfish pleasures. These type of people crave sexual affections so much they force others into it. Then when they get tired of who they are using they "traffick" them for profit and usually find another victim. It was not my friends decision to be trafficked about. She was taken against her will, pumped with drugs, and abused over and over until her family and police were able to locate and rescue her. Trafficking in Houston is caused by these types of personal decisions, regional placements and events; but what's most important is It's negative, regional and personal, …show more content…
Trafficking is corrupting Houston communities. Some traffickers set up businesses near other businesses and/or neighborhoods that make is easier for them to conduct trafficking and find new victims(Leonard). This also makes large Houston events unsafe; for at such gatherings, (for example the super bowl), is where a big part of fresh trafficking takes place. This has many people scared to attend, which lowers revenue to these events and the community. Texas alone, in one year, reported 436 trafficking cases and 144 of them came from Houston(Larson). This is only the number of cases we know for a fact. There could be countless of other individuals that have suffered and are suffering from this horrid crime, not including how it effects their loved ones as well. Many who are victim to trafficking have low self-esteem and have a hard time trusting new people. Whether they are rescued or escape from slavery, when finally free, victims usually need some sort of mental and/or physical rehabilitation; and it is not a fast or easy process. Most victims are scarred for life. My friend was rescued after about two and a half weeks from being kidnapped. When they found her she was extremely weak and almost unconscious from being pumped with all sorts of drugs. It took her about a month to regain normal physical strength but she still hurts from mental wounds to this day.

Due to the lack of awareness about what is going on around communities and states, many men, women, and even children are sexually assaulted, beaten, threatened, drugged, and forced into servitude every hour of every day. There will be no solution to the growing problem of human trafficking until more people are aware of how human trafficking takes place, until states begin to deter human trafficking more effectively, and until more individuals take an active role in reporting possible acts of trafficking to the proper authorities. Therefore human trafficking cannot be defined as any one particular crime; it is not simply sexual exploitation. It is much more than that because human trafficking has many different characteristics. In the article "Hidden in Plain Sight: Human Trafficking in the United States,” Hepburn and Simon state that “. . .…

A common misconception of human trafficking is that it is same or very similar to smuggling. Those who are “smuggled” into a country are doing so by their own free will, without coercion. Human trafficking victims don’t have to be shipped anywhere internationally to still be “trafficked”. Since they are being captured or coerced into slavery, it is against their free will, therefore wildly different from smuggling. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service, Human trafficking is a “criminal business that profits from enslaving people for sexual servitude and forced labor.”…

The foods that we eat are intimately connected to human trafficking and slavery mainly because the people who harvest the fruits and vegetables we eat are often people who have been kidnapped to work as slaves. This practice is tolerated mainly because labor laws are outdated and go all the way back to the time of the Great Depression (Source 1). These labor laws are rarely ever enforced harshly. The tomato growing industries in South Florida is one of the largest benefactors that use enslaved workers to harvest their crop. Most humans who become involved in trafficking are tricked into it. They are women or children who come from very poor families. Someone who is wealthy sees how poor they are and takes advantage of them. They offer the poor woman or child a job as a maid or a salesperson then take them away to some brothel or bar to work as a slave. There are also families where, if the family is poor enough and they have enough children, they will sell some of their younger children to get money to live.…
