Human Trafficking Needs to Stop Human trafficking, a $32 billion global industry, can be defined as the illegal movement of people. It is the second-largest and fastest growing criminal industry in the world. Human trafficking in the United States has increased due to a lack of public awareness and minimum consequences.
There are two different types of human trafficking. Labor trafficking and sex trafficking. “Labor trafficking is defined by Federal law as ‘the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for labor or services, through the use of force, fraud, or coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage, or slavery’” (Mann). People use labor trafficking to get workers they do not have to pay for. Although it saves them money, it is illegal. “The Federal government defines sex trafficking as the ‘recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for the purpose of a commercial sex act” (Mann). Sex trafficking is similar to prostitution in a few ways. The difference is consent. Human trafficking is such a problem because the public is not aware of how serious it is. People are getting taken everyday and being forced to provide labor or commercial sex acts. It does not just happen in foreign countries. It happens here in Michigan.
