Every hour, at least 136 people are forced into slavery worldwide (Compassion). Every nation is ensnared by the curse of human trafficking. It is a global issue that rips the God-given freedom from people of all ages, races, genders, and walks of life. It continues to corrupt morality, demote the value of souls, and erect a form of distrust between human beings. The largest and often most violent form of human trafficking is sex trafficking (Do Something). Why, one asks, does this evil exist in today’s society, and how can it be eradicated? Light. Not only does sex trafficking rob the innocent of freedom, it also has severe effects both physically and mentally on the abused, both during enslavement and after any possible rescue. While forced to be a prostitute, women and children live in conditions that constantly threaten their well-being. The precarious nature of their job puts them at risk of pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and substance addiction. Also, over half of pregnant sex trafficked victims are threatened with murder if they do not have an abortion (Plaster). Although they may be rescued from daily prostitution, survivors of trafficking never escape the loathsome memories of their bondage; depression, exhaustion, shame, fear, distrust, grief, and suicidal thoughts continue to haunt them. These groups use the bountiful profits from trafficking for further felonies, thus jeopardizing everyone’s safety and increasing the vulnerability of future victims. Evil tools in the hands of villains, guns and drugs are used to threaten, deceive, and trap. As sex trafficking increases, authority often becomes powerless or corrupted. Authorities become overwhelmed by manipulative threats from gangs or lose the sight to fight for the exploited. Whereas most expect police to provide rescue and safety, in many countries they are the exploiters. Crafty brothel managers form partnerships with the police. To ensure that their brothel is not betrayed, managers provide special deals for police officers.
