Human Sexuality Analysis

The two topics that I chose to further my personal knowledge and understanding of human sexuality were to view a pornographic video and also visit a store that sells lingerie and sex toys. Overall, I consider myself a “reserved” sexual person. What I mean by this term is that since the age of fifteen or sixteen, I have always had a curiosity about sex. I have always had thoughts about the subject but I did not become sexually active until twenty one years of age. This was the complete opposite for the group of friends that I usually associated myself with. Even with peer pressure and the environment of college, I stayed abstinent for a long time. I like to link my conservative behavior and attitude to the way I was raised when I was younger. As I mentioned in an earlier assignment, the topic of sex was not discussed at all in my parent’s household, I had to actually learn about sex from twenty five year old encyclopedias that my parents had in a bookcase. By growing up in this environment, I believe it greatly shielded my views and opinions on sexuality.

They had different sections of course for men and women but they also had a larger selection of gay pornography. The last time I visited a store, the selection for the LGBT community was very limited and it was also kind of hidden in the back. Even though it was a sex store, the idea of sexuality in the LGBT community was still considered taboo I believe. The store offered everything you could imagine for single people and also couples. From basic lingerie, sex toys to role playing costumes and toys you could use. The store was actually pretty busy for the time of day it was, we went on a Saturday after visiting my wife’s family in Memphis, Tennessee. The name if the facility is called Adult World Super Store located in Widener, AR right off of Interstate

This weeks discussion about sexual arousal really intrigued me. I found it very fascinating to see the statistics of how many times people have had sex, how many times they masturbate in a week, and what kinds of sex people are engaging in. As I was watching the movie today, I found myself trying to calculate what percentage I would be apart of in certain topics of sexual arousal. For instance, I would be in the group of women who have given oral sex. Some of these statistics I was actually really surprised to see, like how many people have anal sex.…

There are many ideas, movements, events, and people that shaped the history of sex and sexuality in the twentieth century. The three most influential are Margaret Sanger, Alfred Charles Kinsey, and the Homophile Movement. Margaret Sanger made birth control accessible to the public, which altered the way in which people of the twentieth century understood sex. Margaret Sanger’s impact on contemporary society was tremendous.…

    Single Sexuality Analysis

I know of two people that are middle aged and widowed. One a male friend of ours and the other my aunt. After 5 years of being a single adult they both continue to maintain their sexual integrity. Some might think it easier to do this than compared to a younger adult who has never been married. In the video Single Sexuality by Dr. Sharon Hart Morris (2016), it is pointed out by Jennifer Cisney (2016) that no matter what age a person is, they are still a sexual being so this indicates that even though they are older and probably wiser, they still struggle with the same sexual frustrations as a younger, unmarried person.…

For my human sexuality class, I was to conduct a sexual interview with an individual focusing on sexuality. We were to ask questions focusing on the individual’s attitudes and feelings towards sexuality and any misconceptions they may have held about sexuality. This activity also allowed the interviewer to become aware of their own feelings and attitudes about sexuality during the interview. I intentionally wanted to conduct this interview with a male, because asking questions around sexuality with males is an issue I am still learning to become comfortable with. Working as a family based therapist I have to ask questions surrounded around sexual activity, sexual trauma, and being to provide parents and adolescent with resources about sexual education.…

From a very young age we are taught the “sexual scripts” (pg. 313) that we are expected to follow and this largely dictates how we feel we should conduct our intimate relationships. Sexual scripts in many societies are largely “heteropatriarcical” meaning they are based on a system of heterosexual male dominance (pg. 354). Tight control over what is sexually acceptable can be harmful for the development of healthy intimate relationships especially for those who do not fall within the traditional heterosexual gender binary. A young American female receives mixed messages about her sexuality every day. In her article The Cult of Virginity author Jessica Valenti says that, “present-day American society- whether through pop culture, religion, or institutions –conflates sexuality and morality constantly” (pg. 336).…

    Sexual Health Issues

In American culture, sexual intercourse and sexual health topics are rarely openly discussed among individuals. Conversations about sex usually take place in a private or intimate setting, although sometimes the topic is avoided entirely (Secor-Turner et al., 2011, p. 489). These topics are often found to be uncomfortable and embarrassing for many people because of the way American culture has regarded the subject (Rittenour & Booth-Butterfield, 2006, p. 57). This could partially be due to religious views, personal opinions about under what conditions it is appropriate to have sex, and fear of social stigmas associated with sex. Conversations between parents and adolescents or even between peers could also be hindered because of the negative…

Sexuality is diverse, and deeply personal to an individual. It is defined as the feelings and attractions one individual feels to another- whether that be the same or opposite sex (Hite, 2004). Weeks (1986) argued sexuality is not given, it is a product of negotiation, struggle and human agency. People will label their identity of sexuality under the few common labels; heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual and asexual. Asexual is associated with societies that demonstrate little to no interest in erotic activity (Marshall and Suggs, 1971).…

Being a part of a Human Sexuality course has definitely opened my eyes to many different topics and issues that are occurring around the world. I believe I have lived a very sheltered life after learning about some of these topics, because I hadn’t even heard of most of them. I liked to think I knew all there was to know about human sexuality simply because I understood sexual intercourse, STI`s, and using protection. But human sexuality involves much more than those three things. Three of the major topics that have made me really think about how uneducated I was in regards to human sexuality were sexual birth defects, gender identity and gender roles, and sexual assault.…

With describing and defining sexual deviance, it is important to define sexuality. Sexuality denotes those encounters that lead to erotic arousal and a genital response. As John Curra states in the chapter The Relativity of Deviance, “human sexuality allows opportunities for communication that is deep and extensive, personal disclosure, and physical pleasure.” However, sexuality is indeed a social construction; there are rules that “govern” society’s expectations.…

Many students do not get that luxury and are left to turn to the internet or their friends in order to scrounge up appropriate knowledge that is still at the hands of those who may shame a person with different morals. Young women who choose a more promiscuous lifestyle than abstinence, even while staying protected despite their limited knowledge of how to be safe, cannot feel comfortable in an environment that continuously tells them that what they choose to do with their body is sinful or wrong. In a country with such a variety of opinions, religions, and beliefs, conflicts dealing with the morality of sexual education are sure to arise, but no part of any education should allow for that type of society to culminate within a school community to the point that the school places young women’s values as a citizen and human being below that of their ability to conform to their limited societal…

At the beginning of the semester, I was not sure what I was getting into by taking this course. I figured I was not only going to learn new things, but also be disgusted or uncomfortable about some of the topics and information. Human sexuality is not a topic that people are very open about, which can lead to confusion or misunderstanding surrounding certain topics. After a few weeks into the course, I quickly realized I did not know near the amount of information I thought I did regarding human sexuality. Even some of the basics, like the correct name for certain actions or areas of the body, I was unaware of.…

Human Sexualities is unlike any other class I have ever experienced. It has given me the insight and knowledge about our everyday lives, which now makes sense to me. I have learned about the sexual reproductive system for both men and women, the physiology behind the sexuality, gender roles and scripts, and many more topics of discussion. Therefore, it has also given me the opportunity to learn more about myself. As a child I was not a very sexual person or even very “myself” around the opposite sex.…

For the majority of my life, sex was a very foreign idea to me. My parents never gave me the “birds and the bees” talk when I was a kid, and whenever the subject came up they would just remind me to “never have sex before marriage”. I was raised in a very religious family, which meant that any sexual activity that wasn’t related to procreation was considered a sin. Because of this belief, it was just assumed that no one would even think about sex, so none of my family members really brought it up. Although I was never personally interested in being sexually active, I still had a lot of questions related to the subject growing up.…
