Human Services Case Study Essay

This case evaluation is based on Ben and Joan Matthews p 228-231. This case is about Joan, her husband and her three children left Illinois to drive to Florida so Ben could find work. Ben was unable to find work so they are headed back to Illinois. Ben ends up hitting Joan and leaves Joan and the children stranded in a restaurant halfway to Illinois without any money and no cell phone with hungry children. The role of Human Services in this case is to provide Joan (the client) with assistance by intervening to facilitate Joan and her three children have shelter and food and are able to return safely to Illinois.
Joan initially made contact with Shirley when Joan called Human Services at 8:00 p.m. The Human Services office where Joan is located closes at 5:00 p.m. so the Joan’s call has been automatically referred to the emergency child abuse line where Shirley is the helper on duty.
The initial interview began with Shirley being pleasant and professional attempting to establish a climate for positive communication and makes sure that Joan and the children are in a safe place. She listens and Joan tells her what happened. Shirley informs Joan that she and the children can take a cab to a women’s shelter and that the shelter will …show more content…
Shirley helped to create a bridge by teaming up with the shelter to deliver services to Joan and her children. Partnerships are formed when two or more human service organizations work together as a team to provide services. Case management techniques are also used this case study as Shirley helped to coordinate the services and let Joan know about the services (the shelter, making sure Joan and the children met with a nurse, facilitated Joan making a telephone call, and helping Joan cope with the crisis). These are the second, third, and fourth steps of the intervention (planning the intervention and implementing the intervention and resolution of the
