The human service profession consists of multiple sub-professions. All of which are of equal value to the people which they serve. For this paper we will look at the social worker profession and the role it plays in the human service profession.
The main focus of a social worker is to help individuals, families and groups cope with a wide variety of problems (2016 June 11, Bureau of Labor Statistic). These problems may vary by nature and resources available which determine the method used to treat the problem. Social worker duties include but are not limited to: Identifying people and communities in need of help, assess clients’ needs, situations, strengths, and support networks to determine their goals, Respond to crisis situations such as child abuse and mental health emergencies, Develop and evaluate programs and services to ensure that basic client needs are met and to provide psychotherapy services (2016 June 11, Bureau of Labor Statistic).
An important aspect in social work is advocacy. A worker in this field advocates or raises awareness on behalf of their clients and the social work profession on local, state, and national levels. They also function at the community level to organize fund-raisings and develop new community services. A medical social worker is trained to help patients and their

Training generally includes courses of study focusing on social work practice, social welfare policies, human behavior, and the social environment. Supervised field experience is also necessary. The median annual wage for social workers was $45,900 in May 2015. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $28,530, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $76,820 (2016 June 11, Bureau of Labor
