It is 3pm at AMC Studio 30, I clock into the Guest Services station and I am ready to set things moving. The Guest Services Specialist could be regarded as the ship captain who controls the concessions deck, tickets, and the cleaners of the poop deck, or the used theaters. A job like this can never be done alone, even if there are only a couple of people on board. "Clean up theater 7," I say, "replace the ticket paper," I demand. Orders, orders, orders are always traced back to me, Guest Services Captain.…

In order to graduate from the University of Mary with a psychology degree, students must take a Senior Capstone, during which a volunteer experience must be completed. Volunteer experience must be completed because one of the key elements of the human service field is social change, which can occur through volunteer work. Not only is volunteer work a key element of the human service field, it also allows students to give back to the community and to grow in a way that might be out of one’s comfort zone. While giving back to the community is enough reason alone to do volunteer work, there are also a few added bonuses like it allows the individual to gain experience in certain work and can help create networking opportunities. Social Work Profession and its Core Values and Human Service Experiences My understanding and personal definition of a social worker is a person with compassion, empathy, and sympathy working to help the well-being of people who are physically, mentally, or socially disadvantaged. A real social worker goes above and beyond always upholding the social worker code of ethics. This is the social worker I have embodied, one who incorporates the core values: service, social justice, integrity, and competence. One who understands to provide service to help individuals achieve their utmost potential. Couple weeks ago, my husband wanted to introduce me to the human resources specialist, who used to work with him at the same company. I was kind of reluctant at the beginning to meet and chat with a stranger, especially that I haven’t met her in my whole life and I don’t know how she looks like. After she replied to my husband in a week or so, we exchanged phone numbers and managed to add each other on Linkedin, advances in technology made it so much easier for both of us. I was capable of viewing her profile and familiarizing myself with her career history. Time has come for us to meet and we managed to set time around 3:30 at a coffee shop.…

One the most significant things that I learned in introduction to human services this semester was that everyone experiences situations differently, what might be something unimportant and minor to you might be a trigger for someone else. You should always be mindful of others, I think us as human beings we tend to be a bit selfish and like to think that the world revolves around us. Which, is ridiculous because the world has 7.3 billion people and counting, and what makes me more significant than all those other people? Sometimes I’ll go out to the store in a hurry and I’ll get a line with a cashier that is being extremely slow, and I get upset and start thinking of some nasty things about the cashier, without ever taking into consideration what that person might be going through.…

There are so many other things people would rather do than support their neighbors, that humans today have forgot of the great importance of service. Most people, like myself, fail to understand that service doesn’t only benefit the person in need.…
