My father and I made efforts to see her on a regular basis, but that turned out to be once or twice every one or two months. This is far from enough social interaction for most people. During the time in between our visits, she would occasionally go on outings with folks her age, but only one companion was truly by her side all the time. Her most valued comrade was her dog, Skeeter. He was far from the only dog she had ever owned, but he was her last. He served as a great emotional support when no one else could be there for her. On her deathbed in the ICU, my father snuck in Sketter from a state away so that she could see him one last time. Without dogs, the lives of those who need help emotionally or physically would be sorely lacking the companions they lean
