This commitment often takes the form of providing primary services to clients in order to promote positive outcomes. In child welfare cases, case managers are often assigned to a child to assume the responsibility of coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating treatment plans specific to their client’s needs. In the Gabriel Myers case, the assigned case worker failed to “consult psychiatrists contracted by DCF” and didn’t coordinate adequate preventative treatment plans for Gabriel, even after learning he was the victim of molestation (Tampa Bay Online,…

In other words, it was important to focus on approaches that was educative to client change which led to the emphasis of viewing the social worker as a skillful teacher with social approaches to develop and reform (Murdach, 2011). The social work’s mission includes all levels, yet, the historical divide regarding the different level of micro, mezzo, and macro practice still exist (Hill, Ferguson, & Erickson, 2010). Richmond would be identified as the “direct social work practitioner” (Hill, Ferguson, & Erickson,…
Working with seniors in the case of abuse is challenging and demanding, and social workers need to use an anti-oppressive approach in order to address the issue and meet seniors’ needs. Additionally, social workers need to have a deep knowledge about risk factors, symptoms of neglect and elder abuse, in order to address the consequences and prevent them from reoccurrence (Donovan & Regehr, 2010). Elder abuse is a result of oppression based on age, which means that structural anti-oppression intervention surrounding aging is required in order to “confront and change social institutions, policies, laws, and economic and political systems that operate in a way that benefit the dominant group at the expense of subordinate groups” (Mullaly, 2007,…
Since there is no official definition of Human Services, it can be defined in many different ways. Overall, Human Services involves various activities that cover a multitude of categories aimed at helping individuals enhance their well-being. While analyzing the required text for this week there were five ethical categories that reoccurred through each document: responsibilities to parents, collaboration, community, personal development, and students. In addition, there are other categories, but these are the most significant to me. Special education teachers have a responsibility to parents: • Use culturally appropriate communication with parents and families that is respectful and accurately understood (CEC, 2010). • Actively seek and use the knowledge of parents and individuals with exceptionalities when planning, conduction, and evaluating special education services and empower them as partners in the education process (CEC, 2010). • Respect the private nature of the special…
In the field of human services, having a nonjudgmental mindset is crucial to carrying out your job efficiently. In order to work with clients from all different backgrounds, it is necessary to know how to adjust your method to each individual. On my journey to becoming a human services professional, I have dealt with my own prejudices like never before. There are so many things that we say or unconsciously think on a daily basis that projects a great deal of prejudices without knowing it. The baseline and the hidden bias tests were eye-openers for me.…
My Personal Philosophy of the Helping Profession Rachel Devlin Central Community College Human Services Department My Personal Philosophy of the Helping Profession Life is meant to be lived, but life is what your make it. Choices define who we are but not who we could be. It can be hard, with struggles internally and externally. It can be painful. Things happen in life that hurt, some is due to circumstances beyond our control while others happen due to the choices we make.…
As I have learned throughout my time as a social work student at Carleton University, I have become familiar with the generalist perspective of social work practice. My understanding of the general perspective stipulates, that it is better for a social worker to have a strong understanding of multiple theories and ways of practice, rather than being proficient in solely one theory or practice. This is directly related to the changes that have occurred at my placement, I have luckily been able to learn from two supervisors. Therefore, I was able to develop 2 distinct practices, which were influenced by my first supervisor Hadiya, and my second supervisor Caitlin. Both of the practices that I have learned were developed by watching how both of my supervisors respond to different experiences, as well as their interaction patterns with the residents of Harmony House.…

It is recommended that human services educators, professionals, and agencies consider the benefits and limitations of technology in their work before implementation. This model changes how human services are delivered. Agencies can meet the needs of multiple customers by leveraging common services and standardizing and benchmarking practices at scale help state and local human services agencies…
What are the barriers to receiving services and how might a human service professional counter them? There can be many different barriers to receiving services such as the clients view of their situation, embarrassment, reluctance to admit they have a problem, cultural differences, and client’s perception of helpers are some of the barriers that prevent people from seeking help. As human service professionals, we can counter some of these barriers by communicating with clients and building positive relationships, so we can understand the needs of our clients and adequately help them. In terms of cultural differences we should educate ourselves on the different cultural values of the clients we will be working with.…
