INTRO The Aztec civilization settled in Central America, or modern day Mexico, and lasted approximately 300 years, from 1345-1521 AD. The Aztec people lineage traces back to the barbarian chichimecs. Their name also means ‘people of Aztlan’. The capital of the Aztecs, Tenochtitlan dates back to 1345, the start of their civilization. Their population was one of the biggest of their time period, with roughly twenty five million people the Aztecs rapidly expanded over the course of approximately two hundred years. Human sacrifice was a principle idea in the culture of the Aztec civilization. Evidence of human sacrifice shows that roughly one percent of the population is sacrificed annually. This would mean that their agriculture would continue to be reliable, and give a surplus of food, thanks to the Earth and Sun gods and deities. Furthermore, the more territory that the Aztecs conquered in Mesoamerica, the more opportunities were provided to come into contact with new resources, which would have an influence on how the sacrifices would go about. SECOND BODY The Aztecs’ views on their sacrifices were so normalized that they were perfectly content with the rituals. The captors of the victims, which were usually kings, nobility, or people in higher power, often danced with them, or held parties after or even during their sacrifice. These victims were often war hostages that were taken when their land was taken over. People from all over the area or the town would come over to celebrate, watch, and join the festivities that theta had when these sacrifices happened annually.
