My impression of the Aztec culture is that even thought they were thought to be barbaric in nature because of their ritualistic killings they were actually very religious and kind. They were well educated and many described them as creative thinkers and mathematicians. This is evident through the engineering marvel of the city they constructed without the use of modern tools or transportation methods. Even though the Aztecs knew of the wheel at the time the city was built, they only used the wheel for toys. The Aztecs had a dynamic agricultural economy focusing primarily on farming.…

The Aztecs: A Very Short Introduction by David Carrasco is a succinct but comprehensive history of the, in many ways infamous, ancient Latin American civilization known as the Aztecs. His book goes through an overview of the foundation and creation of the Aztec culture and way of life, their expansion, their taboo rituals of sacrifice and reputation as a violent and warlike group, and eventually the fall of the civilization as a whole. The book as a whole speaks volumes in its simplicity; it gives readers an excellent sense of what this strange and once very powerful culture once was in, as the title suggests, a very short amount of pages. The book begins with the description of the massive and intimidating wonder that was the city of Tenochtitlan.…

When the Aztecs first identified the Spaniards arrival to their land in 1519, the Indigenous people of Mexico perceived the strange men to have “light-skin” and “hair that only comes to their ears.” Previous to the Spaniards arrival, the Aztec’s land had undergone strange omens, making their society nervous for future events. However, their king, Motecuhzoma, saw them as gods, or Quetzalcoatl, and wanted to show his adoration by having made the finest gifts to present and given to the strange men. The Aztec’s way of admiration and respect to the gods was through sacrifice, a custom that was traditional when presented with a deity.…

When the Spanish arrived in what is now Mexico, they were shocked by the level of complexity of Mesoamerican civilizations, but particularly by their penchant for human sacrifice. While human sacrifice is well documented among the Aztec of Central Mexico it is not as well documented among the Maya civilization of Mesoamerica. There is debate among archaeologists as to whether many of the burials claimed to be evidence of human sacrifice among the Maya should be reinterpreted as funerary, citing lack of evidence of violent forms of death (Weiss-Krejci, 2003). While many researchers are still in disagreement on certain aspects of Maya human sacrifice, there is ample evidence found in the art, literature, architecture, early ethnographic accounts,…

Being generous was viewed as the most important, even in the eyes of God, as shown through his miracles.
