This collective duty that world leaders realize should be implemented into worldwide refugee resettlement in countries whose current infrastructure can support them. Singer’s example of the Bengali refugees corresponds directly to the threat that the Syrian refugees pose to the greater good, or level of happiness within our global society. It’s important to note that it’s not only the responsibility of European governments to create systems for resettlement because of their proximity to the situation, as Singer points out with the Bengali crisis, but governments around the world including the United States, must cooperate across international borders to solve this massive crisis. Australian, Canadian, and American government must look at the way that countries like Germany are taking charge and resettling large numbers of refugees and follow suit. With more than 59.4 million people “forcibly displaced worldwide, including 19.5 million refugees, mostly living in developing countries,” Syrian refugees are in desperate need of global assistance (Vietti and Tibaldeo 43). With most refugees living in third world countries, often surrounding Syria, their suffering is often not decreasing. Through resettlement and utility control is given to governments in regards to the number of refugees taken in and the way their systems work. This control that’s given to these governments is important because they can protect a larger number of refugee through the utilization of efficient systems of resettlement. The opportunities that will be given to the refugees once they’re resettled may be challenging to distributed without implications on the current systems of each respective government but the need for the resettlement of refugees is growing and should be the priority of governments around the world.
