Trait theory leadership, is based on the identifiable behavioral characteristics that are common in natural leaders. This theory subscribes to an individuals’ natural leadership traits, and the role these traits play with leaders. These leaders rely on their natural abilities to lead, they are often unflappable in crisis situations, prioritizing, delegating, problem solving, and mastering conflict resolution (Thompson, & Riggio, 2010). These leaders can be resistant to change imposed by others, confident in their own ideas. Whereas, situational theory, developed by Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard, refers to leaders and their ability to modify their personal leadership style to accommodate their subordinates, as the situation warrants. If a leader has the vicissitude to morph their leadership to address the needs of their team, they will bridge the gap of understanding (Leonard, & Lang, 2010). The ability to apply the necessary changes to address the situation, in tandem with their natural talent for leadership. Situational leadership skills can be cultivated in individuals that lack trait leadership skills, with education, encouragement and quality coaching. Valuing the leadership styles of management is vital to properly supporting the needs of the staff. Developing comprehensive guidelines, to be utilized by leadership for daily interactions, is imperative to creating a unified workforce. Guideline A.B.C.’s of leadership; A. analyze the situation at hand thoroughly, ensure you understand all aspects of the conundrum. B. be honest, examine the situation at hand, be honest with your skill level and ability to effectively manage the situation. If not, be a responsible leader and seek the counsel of someone with the skill level needed to address the task. Finally, C. communicate effectively, express yourself, your reasons, and expected outcome in regards to the situation. It is critical that an open line of communication exists within the workforce, resulting in a connected team, free to share ideas and
