Human Resource Case Analysis At times, employers have to make the decision between hiring employees or independent contractors. There are advantages and disadvantages to independent contractors. The case the student presented was regarding a grant writer position at a non-profit organization. The non-profit organization focuses on providing food to local food pantries and soup kitchens. This mission is crucial to Palm Beach County since there are no other companies taking care of this need in the county. Since the company provides services free of charge to the local soup kitchens and pantries, fundraising is crucial for the existence of the non-profit organization. The organization must cover the cost for drivers, trucks, gas, insurance, a refrigerated warehouse in addition to other expenses. A decision has to be made and the debate is the following, whether the grant writing position will be filled by an employee or an independent contractor. The fact that grant writing is the main source of income for the non-profit organization, the decision is not to be taken lightly.

In other words, the efforts are split between their clients. In the case of a grant writing company, they might have turnover in staff, giving the non-profit several writers in a short period of time. The lack of continuity hurts the organization due to the fact that each writer has to become familiar with the mission and this is a time consuming process. Grant writing also requires team work, other departments are involved in the process, and for instance, program and finance have to work along with the grant writing position. Independent contractors have several clients and they must accommodate all the different schedules, making the scheduling with the non-profit departments
