James Herriot's All Creatures Great And Small

James Herriot’s All Creatures Great and Small, is portrayal of the author's life as a country veterinarian in Yorkshire, England. Throughout his descriptive telling of his tedious choice of career a common thread evolves involving human relationships. Analysis and comparison of Herriot’s depictions with today's social climate, will allow us to contrast the importance of or lack of importance of human relationships. The three aspects of human relationships we will explore are how choice in life and career determine our level of interaction with others, the level of confidence in your career versus the level of confidence in your relationships, and how there is no direct correlation between wealth and happiness.

Social media is currently the most common interaction for the modern day entrepreneur. Herriot as a businessman had only newsprint and word of mouth versus today's modern businessman who has the ability to advertise through mass emails, web pages, newsprint, word of mouth, and networking. The amount of social interaction is limitless, now the choice of how much interaction is determined by how much interaction the business owner wants to have. As a new veterinarian Herriot writes of being hesitant or not as quick to perform certain tasks. He struggled to gain the confidence of the farmers, leading to a lack of confidence in his abilities. With the repetition of certain tasks, for example birthing calves, his confidence grew in his abilities to perform his job. This new found confidence allowed him to perform his job more efficiently, leading to increased confidence from the farmers. When you feel confident in yourself it is harder for others to point out your flaws. Confidence lead to more comfortable social interactions.

How confident are you in your social relationships? Are you comfortable sitting across the table from a love interest? Social media provides a safety net for those with a lack of confidence in their interpersonal skills. The few words typed over social media are often times misleading, or misinterpreted.
