Charlie’s life is much different from most people’s because he is mentally retarded. People always treated him differently, for example some people in the bakery he worked in made fun of him and tried to get him to do stuff you would not normally do. Charlie does not realize that people treat him differently. He is okay with how his mind works and how he is, but does not realize how other people are not. Human nature now, it is normal to judge someone or put someone out differently than people who are like everyone else. Charlie starts to understand that he is just an experiment and does not like how he is being recognized as an experiment not a human. Charlie then realizes that he is now smarter than the doctors and chooses to set Algernon free while they are on stage at the convention. He goes back to New York and hides from the doctors. He decides to go back to the lab to do his own work, and watches Algernon start to lose his intelligence. He starts to fear that this will happen to him also. Soon after Algernon dies. He finds what is wrong with the doctors operation and realizes he will become retarded again
