Personal Narrative: My Interest In Public Relations

The area of public relations that I’m highly interested in is Media Relations. I chose media relations because I’m drawn to the idea of creating a presence for a company online. Social media is completely changing how people consume, and that affects those who work in Media relations. While some may be intimidated by that, I choose to look at it as a challenge to get bloggers, and subsequently the public, to buy into the product or service I’m trying to sell. There’s a lot of critical thinking that goes into this area of public relations, and not just with how to sell the product/service, but how to remain relevant online as well. Through strategic thought and careful analyzation, someone in this job field can predict when the “next big thing” is going to happen, and beat other companies to the punch in emphasizing that online. Throughout the last ten years or so, it’s been interesting to see which trends have come and gone, and I would …show more content…
In general, however, I need to secure an internship specific to my major, as well as my interests, so that I could get this specific internship as well. Both of these things will look good on my resume, and prove to help me in the long run when I search for jobs that are entry-level. The mid-level job I found was that of a Media Relations Director for AT&T, in California. The basic description of the job is the same as the internship that I first came across, with the biggest difference obviously being that of experience. While the key responsibilities may be alike, this job requires 5-8 years of experience in the field and an understanding of Hollywood media outlets. It also has a strong preference towards candidates that had education in journalism and

I first started looking for a summer internship during the spring 2015 school semester. I used various outlets and applied to many jobs in Long Island, NY and in Albany, NY. I found that using career websites, such as CareerSaint or Indeed.com, did not result in me finding much because I would send out my resume, and not really know who my resume went to so I could not follow up with the company if I wanted to. So, I started researching online, mainly using search engines such as Google.com, companies that I thought would be a good fit for me. My major is Actuarial Science, however I am still looking at working in different areas in business in order to find something that I really enjoy doing and can see myself doing as a career for the rest of my life.…

I would consider myself moderately anxious about public speaking. I remember the first few communication apprehensions I experienced in my personal and work life. With my personal experience, I was at church when I shared a testimony with the bible study. With my work encounter, I had to conduct status updates for two areas during project implementations and testing phases with a large group. In both situations, my heart pounded loudly right before I spoke and when the words came out of my mouth, I felt like I had to speak quickly like Speedy Gonzalez!…

During this weekend, I can say that I experienced all three levels of communication. It is something that at first, I did not realize that I was being that particular way. When I pick up my coffee, when I buy clothes, and when I walk into a store etc.…

Imagine standing in a line at a store preparing to pay for your items and right before it is your turn to checkout, a couple cuts in front of you. Even though it sounds unlikely, this exact scenario happened to me while standing in line at a local Wal-Mart in Tallahassee. While standing with a surprised look on my face, I watched the couple slowly walk up and place their items on the belt to proceed to checkout. Many emotions traveled through my mind as I witnessed the couple cut in front of everyone waiting in line. Initially, I was angry because of the family’s disrespect…

“Congratulations!!” read one post on a friend’s Facebook wall, the day after she landed an office job in her field. “So amazing!” read another. “Are you ready for your big-girl job?” asked a third well-wisher, accompanied by a GIF of Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope. “I can’t believe I finally have a real job” was the text she sent me a few days later, from the comfort of her desk, where she had been hired to do operations work for an organization she had once, a few years prior, interned for.…

In an ever-diversifying world, especially here in America, a challenge many of us face is cultural boundaries. It is not uncommon for us to be oblivious to other cultures because it isn’t one of our priorities to be knowledgeable about them. While pursuing a career in physical therapy, I am sure to treat a multitude of people from all over the world. It is imperative to my profession that I am exposed to as many interactions with cultures, other than my own; to increase the rapport I hope to have with my patients, and to become a more well rounded individual. To develop my proficiency in culture I was blessed to interview Ms. Alessandra Ramos, a 21 year-old biochemistry student with dreams of working with children as a doctor of medicine, whom I met as a new member from the Pre-Health Society, a club I am an active member in at California State University Dominguez Hills.…

I began working on my flexibility when I was only a year old--I did the splits across the Atlantic Ocean. With one foot in Bulgaria and one in America, I had to learn to hold my stretch for months at a time. Soon after I was carried, swaddled, and sung to on the flight into the United States, I learned to walk and speak English. I have PBS Kids and Looney Tunes mostly to thank for this, though I admit American public education could possibly have had some part in my fluency. It wasn’t long before I began writing semi-comprehensibly and nagging my parents in not one but two languages.…

The importance of an internship experience cannot be overstated. Today, employers favor prospective employees who have done not only one internship but multiple internships. A college education will serve to propel a graduate into a profession by conferring a degree, which demonstrates an academic proficiency in various theoretical and practical examples of ways that a job might be performed. An internship makes the classroom’s abstract theories and learned examples concrete by placing the student in a real life work situation with real live co-workers performing actual professional tasks, which the job encompasses. Therefore, the payoff of an unpaid internship is that you will gain invaluable professional experience, where you might…
