Human Relations Perspective The human relations perspective is a way to manage a corporation where the employees are viewed as social beings with complex needs and desires as opposed to just units of production. It is based on the works of Abraham Maslow and Douglas McGregor in the mid twentieth century. This perspective places an emphasis on the social networks found in a corporation and uses gratification, not depravation, to provide motivation in the workplace. The human relations perspective developed in the mid twentieth century and was an extension of the behavioral viewpoint. A manager that supports the human relations perspective views employees as social beings who are motivated by not only monetary incentives, but psychological needs as well. Abraham Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs” theory described the complex social, physical, and psychological needs that must be met within a workplace in order for employees to be motivated and perform to the best of their abilities. He believed that there were five levels of needs based in a hierarchy starting with physiological needs at the base. Maslow explained that as soon as needs in the lower levels are met, people will immediately move onto the next level. These needs must be looked at through a modern perspective, and with a professional setting in mind. Physiological needs are people’s basic needs for food, water, etc. and are the lowest level because they are the easiest to obtain.
