Human Nature: The Views Of Mengzi And Xunzi

Improved Essays
Human nature is neutral. When a baby is born, they are born as a blank page, an individual that has not been tainted by the cruelty found in this world, but also somebody who has not been exposed to the profound goodness that can be revealed among individuals. No baby comes out the womb looking to murder and eat another being, however overtime that child is taught that eating an animal is acceptable and beneficial for their overall health. This example is especially stimulating when setting a baby down for dinner, if you put a fruit on one side, and a chicken on the other, which side might become that child’s dinner? When the option is entirely up to the child? No human being is born to kill, they are taught immorality through their environment, and what they are exposed to. While on the …show more content…
Mengzi, believes human nature is good and that all humans are born with “sprouts” the sprouts of judgement, goodness, righteousness, and right and wrong, and anyone without these sprouts were not human. Whereas Xunzi, believes that human nature is bad, and any individual who demonstrates goodness is only displaying goodness out of deliberate effort. I agree with both of the Confucian philosophers based on these examples. However, I simply disagree that human nature itself is good nor bad, since without one there cannot be the other. If human nature were good, there would be no need to question it, and vice versa. How could there be good people if human nature itself is bad? Where would the good or bad come from? Therefore, by seeing this question from this perspective, I agree that humans can exert their deliberate efforts to be whichever they decide to be, whether that is good, or bad, we are all capable of being

Why Nonhuman Primates Engage in Infanticide When anthropologists began to study infanticide, it was seen only as abnormal and counterproductive behaviour. Anthropologists could not discover any positive reasons for primates to engage in infanticide. This is partly due to the fact that infanticide is seen as criminal and deviant in human society. A second reason was due to a lack of evidence and insufficient research done about infanticide. Initially, infanticide was considered bizarre because under natural conditions, animals of the same species rarely kill each other.…

To put it simply, some are not cut out for war. To take another’s life is not easy, but to live with it after, that is the hard part, some people are just not designed to kill, and if forced to in a life and death situation the results are often disastrous, often they will freeze up which can result in their imminent death. But if they do manage to pull the trigger, then often something inside them will snap irreversibly, and no amount of therapy will be able to revive them, they will be lost. However it is not just the psychological shock of taking a life, it is the build-up prior to service. The social pressure.…

In A Modest Proposal by Jonathon Swift he suggests the idea of selling babies and having them as a major dish. He says how this proposal would “lessen the number of papist” (Swift 7) and increase the value of marriage, because the man wouldn’t harm his wife if she were pregnant for fear of a miscarriage and not be able to sell the child. In this passage it is understood why Thomas C. Foster author of How to Read Literature like a Professor says, “not all eating that happens in literature is friendly” (Foster 15). In this “modest” proposal, Swift is suggesting how it is perfectly normal to eat humans. How is eating one another good for everyone?…

One can argue that man’s human nature is both inherently good and evil, but it is through the sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden that each generation born after them was no longer born without shame, which Hsun Tzu does a great job of showing how man’s nature is inherently evil. Hsun Tzu was a Chinese scholar who followed the Confucian belief who lived from 300-230 BCE. He wrote this piece of literature explaining how man is not born with an innocent or pure nature, meaning that in the eyes of God when we are born we are born sinful. If this was not the case, and Mencius was correct about humans being pure in nature then no one would have the urge to murder, steal or anything that we consider to be sinful today. However, this is not…

My thoughts on human nature can best be summed up by the character Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: “We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on, that’s who we really are.” Our ability to critically think about our behavior and make choices is what makes us human and sets us apart from our hominid ancestors. In fact, as far as other species are concerned, there is no concept of “good” and “evil”; there is predator and prey, threatening and safe, dominant and submissive. Morality is not a factor at play in the animal kingdom.…

According to Carl Jung, the archetype anima and animus states that human are essentially bisexual. He also believes that these archetypes must be expressed in every human, and if it is not expressed, the person will experience one side of personality. This belief stirred my thinking. If Jung was right, would all humans have the tendency to be attracted to both man and woman? Would it mean that same sex marriages would be more common?…
