Human Nature In Macbeth

Philosophers, politicians, and writers have always been trying to discover the importance of knowing human nature. Human nature is responsible for our definitions of abstract concepts that are universal across the world like justice, equity, and law. Writers, such as Shakespeare, are able to reveal a different understanding of human nature that causes society to analyze the true meaning and what it means in one’s own life. Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s many plays that displays his profound knowledge of human nature. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is a loyal servant to the king and a war hero. There is no indication of him having evil inclinations in anyway at this point. But, as events unfold opinions start to change; thanks to the evil witches and the encouragements of Lady Macbeth thoughts of evil start to creep into the mind of the once honorable soldier Macbeth. Often times people succumb to the allure of power that evil often brings, turning a once loyal hero into a murdering tyrant. Secondly, Macbeth reveals the role ambition has on human nature. Throughout the play, Macbeth’s ambition clouds his judgement and often time leads him to poor decisions. Even though one can not escape their fate, Macbeth uses his ambition to try and find a way to change the prophecy. At first Macbeth starts out worried about his prophecy. Hearing that himself, a soldier for the king, will one day be king and rule the land is startling at first.
