The role of human connections play an important role both as individuals and as a society; they can have positive effects as well as negative effects. Human connections have positive mental and physical effects on individuals, which add to the well being of the society. They also have negative physical and mental effects on individuals, which can spread to the rest of society. Shelley’s outlook on the role of friendship can be seen as it being essential to the well being of everyone.

Companions care for the individual’s health. They feel the need to care for the being, as if it is a duty as a friend. A prime example of this statement is during the time when Henry Clerval unites with his childhood friend Victor, Victor becomes ill and “Henry was [his] only nurse”(47). These friends are willing to sacrifice a great deal to come to the need of a friend, as seen on page 48, “this whole winter, instead of being spent in study, as you promised yourself, has been consumed in my sick room”(48). The resolve and caring nature of friends enables them to be people who keep an eye on each other and provide physical help when needed. Friends do not actually cause negative effects, but being there for their companion or even being there in the first place can cause negative effects. Also even the character of the so called friend can also be a crucial factor. A major example of this statement is the monsters particular predicament concerning friends. This circumstance is an exquisite example of the theme of alienation, that alienation leads to suffering for the individual experiencing it and for society. When an individual is alienated, they do not have a friend for emotional support, physical/material support, and /or anyone to approve or amend actions. The monster is in the process of asking Victor for a female companion, he then proceeds to state a reason, “I am alone and miserable; man will not associate with me” (113). The monster states that “ Satan had his companions, fellow devils, to admire and encourage him, but I am solitary and abhorred” (119).
