Ensuring that my students are emotionally healthy will be one of my priorities. Motivation, attention span, memory and behavior and, of course, academic achievement are affected by a student’s emotions. I will consider the ASCA model and the mission of my school district to lead me when designing, delivering and evaluating the student-centered and driven counseling programs. I will use the learned theories to integrate academic, career, and personal/emotional competencies goals that are essential to academic learning. I will have to have a working knowledge of learning theories and the developmental stages of the students I serve. I will need to appreciate how behavior and personality affects a student’s success. I will have to be a good listener so that I can make those connections. In advisory classes, we separate the girls from the boys. This removes some social barriers so that both genders feel freer to share their goals, dreams, fears, and apprehensions. When scheduling student’s classes academic abilities and maturity needs to be considered, along with behavioral development, some students need to be placed with teachers that are …show more content…
2.8 Knowledge of three domains of academic achievement, career planning, and personal and social development I have written lesson plans for all the domains in my Principles of Curriculum Development class and my Counseling Skills II class. I wrote lesson plans for several grade levels for both group and individual counseling. The different domains easily relate to topics that promote student success. Learning and maturity will be essential (AR 2.4, AR 2.5). Being an active listener will help me to determine the developmental phases a student is currently in. I will need to recognize my student’s family dynamics since I know that all behavior is purposeful, and issues within a family can cause notable behavior. “The best way to predict you future is to create it – Abraham Lincoln” I believe for a student to start on the path to success they have to identify what they care about, what are they passionate about, what do they stand for.
