Erik Erikson was one of the writers who developed the psychodynamic approach to psychology. His theory is known as the psychosocial theory of development as he believed that a person’s development depends on their social class, culture and their norms for the society that they live in. During these stages a person will go through strands of development which are social, physical, emotional, cognitive and cultural (SPECC) these will change as the person moves through the lifespan.
Infancy (birth to 18months) trust vs mistrust where emphasis based on the parent/carers ability to nurture the child depending on the care given the child should develop basic trusts, confidence and security but if not cared for adequately there will be feelings of insecurity and mistrust.
In the early childhood years (2-3years) autonomy vs shame when the child should build self-esteem and begin to learn right from wrong. However, child could have doubt in own ability to control behaviour causing them to feel shameful. The child will learn social skills like choosing friends and learning to share.
In pre-school years (3-5years) initiative vs guilt. The child will have a desire to copy adults by carrying out roleplay, at this stage the family is the most significant relationship. Sexual relationships may begin as the persons grows towards adulthood and they have gone through puberty. The person will want to be independent but at the same time needs the feeling of security. They will become intellectually stimulated with creative thinking and may take part in cultural activities such as taking part in specific football team.
Moving into adulthood there will be the need for intimate relationships and their social roles will change to that of a parent or worker. In early adulthood, the person will peak in physical fitness. The person will experience transition into marriage or even divorce and may go through the death of loved ones effecting their emotional state. They will develop a sense of belonging to their nation.
In mature adulthood people will have fewer social roles but a fuller social life as they have more time for this. There physical ability will decline and will lose muscle strength and mobility, this can be upsetting and they may feel a loss of identity.
