Caring is the key to nursing. It sets nursing apart from all other professions. It is often viewed as a natural instinct (Jiang, Ruan, Xiang, & Jia, 2015). Nurses spend much of their time with patients, which includes multiple different interactions, some positive, some negative, whatever the reason, nurses are there, caring. Nurses are there to provide a vulnerable, in-need individual with the proper care to heal and grow. The way nurses care for their patients also maintains an individuals dignity (Jiang et. al., 2015) Each patient has a different story, but one thing is common; they all are in need of healing. Human caring is an unselfish act that voluntarily takes on the responsibility of another’s well being (Thorkildsen et. al., 2015). Caring for another individual is love and affection, becoming one with their needs, fears, and emotions (Thorkildsen et. al., 2015). Caring is committing to understand another individuals perspective of the world (Thorkildsen et. al., 2015). Human caring is all around us. When an individual is cared for, it brings safety, affection, and love to the forefront (Thorkildsen et. al., 2015). Bringing a safer appearance to the patient room and environment would be a great start for many patients comfort, health, and well-being (Timmermann, Uhrenfeldt, & Birkelund, 2015). Most patients feel alienated and unsafe within the unfamiliar environment controlled by technology, medical equipment, and people in white coats (Timmermann et. al., 2015). By making the physical appearance of the room more nurturing, a person can relax and begin to heal. According to Timmermann et. al. (2015), art and colors that reflect nature, or a nice view from a window can introduce a greater well-being in a patient by provoking personal strength, and positive thoughts and feelings.
