“Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart” (202). On an island , many kids including Ralph, Piggy, Jack, Simon, and others are stranded as a result of a plane crash. Knowing that they may or may not get rescued, the kids create their own ordered civilization which slowly starts to scatter. William Golding’s Lord of the Flies presents the theme that all humans have evil inside of them and is a natural human trait.
Although many people can be good, there is still evil stowed away inside of them. For instance, when Simon was talking to the Lord of the Flies, it said “‘I’m warning you...We are going to have fun on this island…’ … ‘We shall do you’” (144). In other words, the Lord of the …show more content…
In fact, when Robert was being hurt and hunted, the book states, “Behind him was Roger, fighting him to get close” (114). Basically, Robert, an innocent character playing along, was being hurt and Roger not only didn’t want to help but also wanted to take part. In this quote, it shows that Roger is evil because of his ill-intentions of hurting Robert. Moreover, after Piggy was killed, the book states that Jack, “Viciously, with full intention, he hurled his spear at Ralph” (181). In brief, after Piggy was killed, not only does Jack feel no remorse, but Jack also tries to kill Ralph. Jack trying to kill Ralph while he is fully aware of what he is doing shows that he is a character with evil. Likewise, when Jack argues about hunting, the book states, “He tried to convey the compulsion to track down and kill that was swallowing him up” (51). This means that Jack wanted to kill and hunt and it was overwhelming him. Enhancing the fact that Jack is an evil character, the quote shows Jack having an ill-intention that was taking him over. Humankind is naturally evil and often times shown in broad daylight.
All in all, the theme that evil exists in all humans naturally is presented by William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. Although there are many people that are good, they also have parts of themselves that are evil which are demonstrated through characters like Simon, Jack, and Piggy.
