I agree with you that the big corporations are trying to influence our mind with their catchy slogans to attract us to their products, and they are also trying to make us think that by purchasing their products we are standing out. Individuality was not the important one in the past, but it is an important element nowadays in our society. Some businesses started trying to represent the idea of rebellion in the past through advertisements, for example, being different is good or encouraging break the rules, and it continues till the present, such as the ads of Vision Cologne and Hugo Boss as you mention.
