Communication is the act in which you use words, sounds, signs, or behaviours to exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc., to somebody else. This maybe so, but it is evident in the short story, “The Father” by Hugh Garner, that the character Johnny and his father have no progress in their ability to connect with one another. However, I believe that Johnny’s ignorant nature caused him to act in such a way towards his father. Also, that Johnny’s impulsive trait made him drift away from John even further. Finally, Johnny’s recalcitrant self wasn’t processing how he could fix his relationship between him and John. By trying to see another person’s point of view, people can survive difficult family relationships. Johnny’s ignorance is shown through his actions and how he would talk to his dad or about his dad. Firstly, Johnny never thought through whether he should face his problems or run away from them, instead he ran away in tears. Secondly, Johnny never made an attempt to ever talk to his dad, always giving a blank look on his face and spoke in little phrases. Thirdly, Johnny carved out pieces of wood with Don Robertson, someone else’s dad, and never informed his dad who Mr. Robertson was, which begged the question “Who’s Mr. Robertson?” (Pg.71). Lastly, Johnny never actually asked his father to do anything with him, carving out pieces of wood with him, showing his dad what his hobbies are, who his friends are etc., which made John think that Johnny just wants his space and doesn’t want to do anything with him, leaving their relationship spread apart. Overall, if Johnny thought about his father’s mental state and/or problems, they wouldn’t be in the hole they’re
