English Essay

Communication is the act in which you use words, sounds, signs, or behaviours to exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc., to somebody else. This maybe so, but it is evident in the short story, “The Father” by Hugh Garner, that the character Johnny and his father have no progress in their ability to connect with one another. However, I believe that Johnny’s ignorant nature caused him to act in such a way towards his father. Also, that Johnny’s impulsive trait made him drift away from John even further. Finally, Johnny’s recalcitrant self wasn’t processing how he could fix his relationship between him and John. By trying to see another person’s point of view, people can survive difficult family relationships. Johnny’s ignorance is shown through his actions and how he would talk to his dad or about his dad. Also, he doesn’t even recognize what his dad goes through, he doesn’t seem to see that his mom and dad quarrel, or that his dad might have a drinking

Firstly, Johnny never thought through whether he should face his problems or run away from them, instead he ran away in tears. Secondly, Johnny never made an attempt to ever talk to his dad, always giving a blank look on his face and spoke in little phrases. Thirdly, Johnny carved out pieces of wood with Don Robertson, someone else’s dad, and never informed his dad who Mr. Robertson was, which begged the question “Who’s Mr. Robertson?” (Pg.71). Lastly, Johnny never actually asked his father to do anything with him, carving out pieces of wood with him, showing his dad what his hobbies are, who his friends are etc., which made John think that Johnny just wants his space and doesn’t want to do anything with him, leaving their relationship spread apart. Overall, if Johnny thought about his father’s mental state and/or problems, they wouldn’t be in the hole they’re

In the Communist Manifesto, Karl Marx states, “The bourgeoisie has torn away from the family its sentimental veil, and has reduced the family relation to a mere money relation.” In other words, one can say love has been stripped away from intimate relationships, and has been turned into business matters only. Based off of evidence from novels such as The Lover’s Dictionary by David Levithan, This is How You Lose Her by Junot Díaz, and Another Bullshit Night in Suck City by Nick Flynn, this quote can be disagreed upon to believe that love is in existence in relationships and society does not…

Merriam- Webster generally defines communication as, “the act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to express or exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feelings etc. to someone else.” (Merriam- Webster, 2015) Volunteering at Mountain Care Facility has provided me with a real world perspective into how communication can be expressed through many modalities. Learning and making real- life connections goes way beyond just sitting in a classroom discussing and studying it, learning really happens when you see communication occurring and fully experiencing it first hand. Communication is something we as a society take for granted, and spending time at Mountain Care has shown me the difficulties many people face…
