Huey Percy Newton timeline

1959 Huey P. Newton graduated high school. This was not very common for black people and was a big accomplishment. Even though he was barely literate as stated by his teachers. Huey P. Newton then taught himself to read and was literate.

Oct 15 1966 Huey and Bobby Seale formed the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense. The Black Panthers used military self-defense of minorities. They fought to give blacks rights and give them the freedom that they were promised. The Party was one of the first U.S. organizations to struggle for minorities with military like protection.

Oct 15 1966 The Ten point program was made. The Black Panther Party stated in this program a multitude of demands. They wanted full employment for all black people. They also wanted decent housing. The wanted all black men to be exempt from military

The Black Panther Party did this to protest a gun control law. They were all armed and were not afraid to fight. They said that they would stay there for years until the law was changed.

1973 Huey published his autobiography ‘Revolutionary Suicide’. This book tells of his early life and his life up to the point that it was published. This book also tells about the birth of a revolution. The revolution being the fight for black rights. The book tells of life inside the Black Panther Party as well. It also tells of when he was in jail multiple times during his life.

Aug 17 1974 Huey was arrested again. He was arrested for murdering a prostitute. He was also charged with assault for pistol-whipping a local tailor. He later fled to Cuba after turning the Black Panther Party over to Elaine Brown.

1980 Huey earned his Ph.D. He earned the Ph. D. in social philosophy. He got this Ph.D. for the University of California at Santa Cruz. This is a major accomplishment because he graduated school being illiterate and ended up getting his
