Originally, Portuguese was one of the main merchants of the transatlantic trade, but imitating them were the Europeans. The European people created sugar and coffee plantations and they needed slave labor for economic profits. African merchants then became involved in the trade and they were the suppliers of trade. Denmark was the first to abolish the slave trade, but it had little impact. After creating various clubs and signing petitions the society moved into action because they felt that slavery was horrible and the Middle passage was the most cruel part of the slave trade system. Internationalizing abolitionism was difficult , Portugal wanted money and also settled to only end the trade north of the equator ; more over Spain and the Netherlands signed treaties. Despite, the signed treaties and abolition of slave trading by Britain and other countries illegal trading continued. Many Africans were enslaved and transported to the sugar plantations. The United States previously abolished slavery and agreed to use its own navy to police itself , but they didn 't maintain a consisted border across the coast. They didn 't gain the right to search the vessels so the British could not detect illegal trading. Britain established its own anti-slaving squad the British Royal Navy, which undertook antislavery patrols off the West African coast, seizing hundreds of vessels. The Royal Navy captured thousands of these illegal trading vessels. William Fitzwilliam Owen, a naval officer made nine of these captures. Owen and his crew had the upper power when capturing slaves The Neirsee was going to Freetown with captives, slaves, kru-men and craftsman on board going home. A horrible storm began and it was the perfect time for the slaves to attack and gain control of the ship. Arriving at the British colony the African passengers were sold into slavery. The governor of Domicana demanded to release the British African subjects. Fleming’s officers began a search of the captives without authorization to be on the land, but the British captives were released except one of the craftsman 's wives . France refusal to join the International effort against the slave trade led them to falsifying France flag for protection. After working out a compromise British was satisfied with the return of its subjects and the French overlooked the trespassing of its territory.
