If the word was meant to offend people, the author would not have made the one character Jim, who is of African American descent, use the word to describe a friend. For example, in the book it says “Dey’s mighty good to me, dese niggers is, en whatever I wants ‘m to do fur me, I doan’ have to ast ‘m twice, honey.” (190-191). This quote proves that the word nigger is not meant to be offensive; it is meant to be used as a descriptive word that shows someone’s race. The word nigger has gained a different type of meaning as years have gone on, and that is why people interpret this word as repulsive. Even though the word nigger is now an offensive word, the book gains a lot of meaning from Mark Twain who uses it to describe his characters. The father does not listen to the mother he goes over her head and decides to build another barn, even though the mother specifically asked for a house to be built. This is what starts the conflict within the story, and what could create the controversy to others because of the gender roles. The man automatically feels as if he can do what he wants, and so he does, but when the barn is almost built the father goes away for a trip and the mother moves the house into the new barn. This proves that the woman is asserting her power, even though she knows it will upset her husband. Although the woman does this to her husband, in society this is not accepted because men will always be looked up to as the superior figure. Women who are feminist believe this novel shows the authority woman have and should use, but those who just believe in the traditional family feel that the woman is disobeying her husband.
