Huck knew that Pap would not be home until the morning. He began to put the escape plan in motion. First Huck took all the food and anything worth value from the cabin and put it in the canoe. He killed a pig wondering in the woods and covered the cabin with blood. Huck was making the cabin look as if someone had robbed, killed, and took his body alone with him. He dragged a bag full of rocks from the cabin and stopped at the river. Huck made it look like the killer took his body and threw it in the river. Once it was dark outside Huck got into the canoe and sailed towards Jackson Island. Just as Huck was sailing away, Pap was returning home. When Pap passed the canoe, Huck began to sail faster and further from the cabin headed straight to Jackson Island. Soon Huck begins to relax in the canoe smoking his pipe while looking up into the sky. He was enjoying listening to the sound of the sea and the feeling of freedom. He uses these skills throughout the novel in order to survive. Every detail of Huck’s escape plan was realistic and practical. Huck was able to make a successful plan in a short amount of time proving that he knows how to survive and take care of himself. He did wish that Tom could have there to put a romantic touch on the plan. If Tom were there the escape plan might have been overdone and ruined. This shows that Huck can be self-reliant and succeed on his own. Huck’s ability to think for himself helps when there are situations that only he can fix.
