After looking for a while Huck and Jim found the boat and drove off with it. They saw a lantern and saw that the men were stuck there. Huck tells Jim to stop when they see a vessel nearby. Huck tells the captain to check on the “Walter Scott” because his families ferry crashed into it and were stuck on it. The captain says he’ll check on it so Huck docks on an island to sleep.

Huck and Jim got some of the loot that was being packed so they used the books to entertain themselves. Colonel Grangerford is a tall skinny man with dark eyes and a commanding personality. His sons Tom and Bob are similar but younger. Buck looks and acts similarly to Huck. The other family members are his wife, and his daughters Charlotte and Sophia. They had 4 other children who died. When Huck and Buck are outside they run into Harney Sheperdson (The Sheperdsons son about Huck and Bucks age). Buck tries to shoot him but he runs away. They tell Col. Grangerford who decides to explain the feud to Huck. It started 30 years ago over a dispute about land between the families. Sophia asks Huck to get her testament she left at church which he does. It has a note in it that says half past two. She says it is just a bookmark and Huck makes nothing of it. Buck’s slave was supposed to show Huck some water moccasins so Huck walked with him. Soon they reached the destination and Jim was there with the raft which he had just fixed. The slaves had been feeding him, and for now they were not going to leave until Huck said so. Huck went to sleep afterwards. When Huck awoke the house was empty. The house slave says Harney and Sophia ran off together and the families were fighting right now. Huck goes outside and sees men shooting each other so he hides in a tree. Eventually he sees Buck and talks to him. Buck says his father and both of his brothers had been killed. Huck waits until night to leave the tree. He finds Buck dead in the river and covers him up. He then finds Jim and they leave on the raft.
