Hubris: Charlie And The Chocolate Factory

Hubris concept is a personality that has traits of dangerous overconfidence, lack of humility and very prideful. In ancient Greek times, they referred to hubris as the actions that humiliated the victim for the pleasure or gratification of the abuser. They used this term with a strong sexual reference and they shamed now only the victim but the abuser as well. The meaning of this term has changed greatly over the years. It went from being sexual shaming and punishment to describing someone with a “big head” and very arrogant.
There were several characters I thought of when researching this concept. One character was Walter White from the series Breaking Bad. White is a family man who gets sick with cancer and wants his family to be financially secure after he passes. He works as a chemistry teacher at a high school so he has knowledge about chemicals and how to mix them properly. He starts making meth and selling it locally to put the money up for his family and to also fix everything around their house so his wife won’t have to worry about it when he is gone. The meth making and disturbing gets out of hand, not only is the whole act illegal, but he also has to lie

In both movies, since Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is just a more modern remake of the original, Veruca is portrayed as a spoiled girl who gets everything she wants. She comes from a wealthy family and never gets told no. When they went to interview her after she had the golden ticket, she automatically assumed she was going to win the special prize at the end because she was use to always winning. She is over confident in thinking she is going to win. Another trait from hubris is sometimes lacking knowledge, which she portrays very well in the newer movie. She is set on getting a squirrel from the factory and they end up taking her down the whole where the “bad nuts”

The Hubris of Men Throughout the novel Into the Wild written by Jon Krakauer, a young man, Chris McCandless, is very knowledgeable, as shown by his success in school and his ability to get along with people and accomplish almost everything he puts his mind to. McCandless shows a lot of prideful ignorance throughout the novel and on his journey to Alaska which he is very underprepared for. Every character that goes out to commune in nature in this novel are men; although there have been female characters none of them have undergone similar adventures as Chris McCandless. Females are not mentioned throughout the novel because men have a natural allure to danger because their testosterone makes them more apt to making irrational decisions.…

The doubled-edged sword of excessive amour-propre better known as pride, is liable to stab those who posses it when they least anticipate the injury. In Sophocles’ Oedipus the King. the wound that he was initially numb to became prevalent as the sequence of events took a turn for the worst. Tim Burton is the most unique director of our time. By using cinematic techniques he points out the isolated character in the movie and shows how different they are than everyone else. Although it is consistent that these protagonist characters never fit in, what does vary is their desire to do so and many people argue that this reflects Burton himself. In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Edward Scissor Hands directed by Tim Burton, the use of a wishful protagonist and exaggerated characters conveys that no one should change who you are to meet society 's expectations.…

From this line, one could assume this movie would be about beautiful fun and imaginings, when in reality the children, and their parents, in this story had major psychological problems which caused them and their families no end of pain! Psychological disorders are a real problem, and specific characters in Willy Wonka were troubled by egocentrism, a superiority complex, binge eating disorder, and are crippled by permissive parenting. Veruca Salt, the spoiled, entitled daughter of a rich nut king, suffered…
