Hubble Telescope Essay

The Hubble Telescope and the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope have shown researchers a very interesting image.
A set of ripples traveling through the protoplanetary disc of a star.
This unforeseen and unexpected visual was spotted by a team of research as they analyzed the dust and debris surrounding the star AU Microscopii, or AU Mic, by the use of the SPHERE instrument of the VLT. Astronomers observe AU Mic in hopes of better grasping how planets form and evolve through the young star’s behavior.
Now, thanks to the high-contrast images SPHERE has captured, there’s a new mystery to add to the list.
Observations have shown something unexpected, Anthony Boccaletti writes in a statement. Boccaletti, an astronomer at the Observatoire de Paris, France, goes on to say that the images from SPHERE show a set of unexplained features in the disk,

Since nothing like this has been observed in the past, the team can only hypothesize what they are seeing and what it means, as well as how it happened and what led to the event. So far, asteroids and gravitational instability have been ruled out as possible causes for the rippling, but there’s no explanation as to what causes the waves to form or how they come to be. Their best guess is that a stellar flare sets a chain reaction, a ripple effect, on the region.
AU Mic is a star with high flaring activity, and it often lets off sudden giant bursts of energy from its surface or from near it, as stated by co-author and astronomer at University of Texas’ Steward Observatory Glenn Schneider. One of these flares may well have triggered something in one of the planets, if these are planets. There could be a violent stripping of material that could be propagating through the disc observed, and it could be propelled by the force of the

The Eta Carinae is the only star to produce ultraviolet laser emission. The second star is hot and is high in luminosity, the secondary is about 30 to 80 times as big as the sun. The gravity and the high radiation shows on how we will never be able to inhabit the planet, our neighbors. The Eta Carinae is such a big star or stars of our solar system that if you put it in the center of our system it would blind us and would stretch beyond Earth’s orbit. The Eta Carinae spews out material, in what is called “stellar wind.”…

Planets and the stars have always fascinated me. Finding out how they were discovered is fascinating. We know that William Hershcel discovered the planet Uranus in 1781. But, how did it happen? He was using his telescope to check for “’double stars’—two stars that are so close together that, without proper magnification, they look like one star”.…

Sara Seager is considered a pioneer in the research of exoplanets, a relatively new field of study which largely began in the 1990s. Seager, an astrophysicist and planetary scientist, has been called an “astronomical Indiana Jones” and was named Time Magazine’s 25 Most Influential in Space in 2012. She is currently a professor of planetary science and physics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She received her B.Sc. degree in mathematics and physics for the University of Toronto in 1994, and a Ph.D. in Astronomy from Harvard University in 1999.…

At least nothing Galileo could figure out, that random shape changing would be consistent with the spots being clouds. Over the next couple hundreds years, a lot of hypotheses were tossed around, the spots were mountains or holes in the Solar atmosphere through which the dark surface of the Sun could be seen. Then in 1843, an astronomer named Heinrich Schwabe made an interesting…

Many scientists, starting with Galileo, had noticed there was something strange because of a small fleck they saw in the sky. These scientists had try to discover something new, but each time, their ideas were dismissed. This went on for several years, before William Herschel had the motivation to figure it out for himself. At first, he thought it was a comet, but through a mirror he had built, was able to verify that this object wasn’t making the same motion as a comet would. This is where his motivation began.…

William Herschel was not an astronomer when he discovered Uranus. He was actually a musician and teacher. He looked at the stars as a hobby. However, he used a method different than most star gazers of the time. He mapped out the stars in relation to each other, instead of the traditional grid method used at the time (Smith 2013).…
